Did you have a music box when you were a child? I did and found a music box museum in Singapore. This unique place shows historical background of musical box and how it made its way in South-east Asia.
Musical Box Museum
Musical Experience in Asian Building
Although I just have one small music box (a souvenir from Austria) now, we can enjoy much bigger ones in this antique music box museum. Like Pianola Museum that I introduced on the previous post, this museum is related to music (but only from boxes) as they say in their own words.
In this Singapore’s first musical box museum, we aim to share the historical background from the rise to the fall of the musical boxes to how it made its way to Singapore in the 19th century to the public.
We aim to also, to function as a repository for academic research, education and above all, preservation of such artifacts in Singapore for future generations.
Music box museum with classical mood
Among their collections they have China, the musical box from one of the first collaborations between Britain and Singapore. Since there’re historical music boxes like this, the museum provides guided tour by in-house curators and researchers.
I’m happy to have a kind of “unusual” small museum in Asia this time. Unfortunately I’ve never visited Singapore but want to make a next vacation plan to go there, definitely including this museum.
The museum building is together with Thian Hock Keng temple and I love the way it looks from outside. It’s very Asian, the roof is similar but different from Korean traditional roof.
If you’re supposed to go to Singapore in the near future and interested in “musical” experience, you can visit this museum and let me know how actually it is. I hope there would be many chances to play those big music boxes and enjoy the sound.
I think this place is also good for buying gifts, especially for girls. You can check many little music boxes (with animals, ballerinas, etc.) for sale on their website. I’d love to buy the little transparent one which shows the cylinder inside!
